Manu Biosphere reserve
The Manu National Park (1,692,137.26 ha) constitutes the nucleus of the Manu biosphere reserve (RBM). It is protected and anthropological and biological investigations are allowed only when they do not interfere with the wildlife and ecological processes. One of the most important biological stations in tropical forests is located here, Cocha Cashu. Entry is limited to scientists but the area also supports 1000 indigenous people and 200 Quechua people in the Callanga zone. There are also isolated indigenous people within the zone who have no contact with the outside world.
The transition or cultural zone occupies the exterior part of the area, where economic activities are carried out in accordance with the objectives of the biosphere reserve.
The RBM was recognized by UNESCO in 1977 in an extension of approximately 1 million 800 thousand hectares. The local people all understand the important role they play as a role model in conservation and development and they are requesting an extension of the territory to more than 6 million hectares. This would include the Amarkaeri Communal Reserve as a naturally protected area giving it a more important direct role.
