1.- Indigenous Tourism Company Wanamei S.A.C (Ecotourism Wanamei)
Is an eco tourism company based in Puerto Maldonado and Cusco, Peru. The partners in the company are eight indigenous communities from the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve (RCA) a protected natural area integrated into the Manu Biosphere Reserve. Eco Tourism Wanamei is an ecological friendly and socially responsible travel agency working in the RCA and the territories of the Harakmbut, Matsiguenga and Yine communities. The name "Wanamei" originates from a sacred tree in Harakmbut Village, the company is a continuation of the old company Wanamei Expeditions working with the same principles and objectives

The driving force behind the company are the indigenous peoples themselves, they have a sound understanding of the concept of ecotourism and invite lovers of nature and Amazon culture to visit their territories. They share their knowledge and homes in the humid, tropical forest where the indigenous guide shares information about his forest home and makes it a truly enjoyable experience. The porters and the rest of the team help to make a fantastic trip into a world truly distinct from where the visitor comes from.

The company works within the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve territory and the territories of the eight communities on the eastern side of the Alto Madre de Dios River, in front of the Manu National Park. The area contains 392,699 hectares of tropical rainforest. (bigger than the Manu reserve zone) with areas of up to 2,500 metres above sea level down to the low forest. Today, the area offers us plenty of places to obtain fresh drinking water, reproduction zones for wildlife and the sacred areas of the native's ancestors can be maintained.

2.- Where we carry out our work:
The company develops all projects and activities in the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve that has an area of 402,335.62 ha, and its ZONA DE AMORT of communal lands that take in ancestral lands of the Harakmbut, Yine and Matsiguenka cultures. These lands encompass areas from 2,500 meters above sea level that are the eastern extremes of the Andes mountain range to the LLANO Amazon at 250 metres above sea level, considered as low jungle. These conserved areas offer a source of clean water for the population such as Puerto Maldonado, breeding grounds for the wild life and the preservation of the sacred areas of their ancestors. Politically the area is located in the department of Madre de Dios, Manu Province, district of Madre de Dios, Huepetuhe and Fitzcarrald.

3.-The benefits that the Project provides for local people:
The eight native communities all directly benefit from this project; from the profits generated by the company. Income is used to cover basic necessities such as health, education and the training of company staff. Equally the company supports the conservation of the RCA for this natural protected area which is managed by the Indigenous partners in the company ECOTURISMO WANAMEI. The support of individual initiatives, in accordance with the communal objectives, that emerge from the communities are always respected and supported.

    4.- A Brief Historical Account.
An expert tour evaluator was sent to Cusco by "Studienkreis für Tourismus und Entwicklung e.V" (Institute of tourism and development) in November 2001 to evaluate the service offered by WANAMEI EXPEDITIONS. He was to take part in a five day tour of the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve, navigating the Madre de Dios River and visiting the settlements of the Shintuya, Shipetiari, Diamante and the tourist attractions of Wachipaire.

After the results of the evaluation were submitted it was recommended that WANAMEI EXPEDITIONS be nominated for a prize in the International Tourism Conference in Berlin ITB 2002. At the convention the company won the TO DO! Prize for socially responsible tourism.
