7 DAYS / 6 NIGHTS:
"Indigenous Life Tour of Harakmbut and Matsigenka".
This trip includes short treks and a trip by river and a visit of two indigenous cultures in the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve. A brief glimpse of the Harakmbut community will give us a general idea of life in the reserve and another visit to a typical community Matsiguenka will offer us the chance to learn about their culture, customs, and local use of medicinal plants. We will visit the Traditional Medicine Centre and have the option to partake in an ayahuasca session under the guidance of an expert Matsiguenka shaman. In addition there will be ample opportunity to observe wildlife, like the macaw "collpas" or clay licks, and mammal "collpa" in the Boca Ishiriwe indigenous community.
ITINERARY:
First day:
Early departure from Cusco by road with typically Andean scenery and culture to be enjoyed along the way, we head through the mountains towards Paucartambo, a traditional, Andean village where we will eat lunch. As we continue towards Acjanaco we make a stop to appreciate the extreme south of the Manu National Park and take in a panoramic view of the forest from a height of 3500 metres. (sometimes the view is restricted by clouds). We further enjoy the cloud forest and small high jungle communities before reaching the native community of Shintuyo, where we will pay a visit and then continue to Tambo Weuk where we will eat dinner and spend the night.
Second day:
Early we can take a nice hot bath in wells with medicinal waters then eat breakfast. Afterwards we set off in boat down the Alto Madre de Dios River; leaving the last of the Andes behind us we begin to enjoy the scenery of the low lying jungle where we will visit the local Matsigenka de Shipetiari community at mid morning. We will eat lunch, trek around local trails and interact with the people. Then its dinner and we spend the night here.
Third Day:
Alter breakfast we head to Traditional Medicine Centre, and then settle in to the traditional Matsiguenka style cabins. Then a shaman (regarded as spiritual guide and healer of the area) will show us the medicinal plants, which have helped the Amazon cultures survive in the jungle for thousands of years, their properties and how and why they are used traditionally. After lunch our trek will lead us in search of birds and other wildlife, we then return to eat dinner and those who wish to may take part in an ayahuasca ceremony in the evening.
Fourth Day:
Alter breakfast in the Traditional Medicine Centre we go to Boca Manu, were we will stay in a lodge. After lunch we go in search of the giant river otters and birds such as the Hoatzin, locally known as Shansho. Then its dinner and overnight.
Fifth Day:
We eat an early breakfast and visit a "collpa" of macaws where a large number of these birds gather to balance their diet by eating the nutrient rich earth. Here we will get a chance to take some photos. This attraction is best observed between May and July and less so between August and September. After witnessing this marvellous and colourful spectacle we travel to Boca Isiriwe where we eat lunch. In the afternoon we visit another "collpa", with luck we may be able to see huanganas???? and tapirs amongst other mammals. We eat dinner and spend the night in a camp on the beach of the Ishiriwe River.
Sixth Day:
Breakfast and then we leave to the village of Colorado, from here the trip is in a large out board motor boat or by road to the port of Laberinto, we eat lunch on the way and then take a bus or taxi to the city of Puerto Maldonado accompanied by the guide. We spend the night in a hotel of your choice.
Seventh Day:
After breakfast we go to the airport for flights to Cusco or Lima.
