History.
The actual location of Amarakaeri communal reserve has always been the territory of the Harakmbut (Amarakaeri, Wachipaeri, Kuzambaeri, Arazaeri, Toyeri, Sapiteri) with the arrival of the missionaries to a certain extent there has been a concentration of the people and communities such as Shintuya have started to form.
Due to the increasing presence of immigrants, mostly Andean, taking their land, the Harakmbut started to register their territory. Sadly the government only recognized ownership of small pockets of land in relation to the population numbers and did not take into account their traditions and customs.
In 1986, for the first time, the Harakmbut indigenous communities forced the government into creating the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve. It was ratified in a meeting of congress of the Federation of Madre de Dios River and subsidiaries (FENAMAD) in 1989, with the purpose of maintaining ancestral territories.
In 1990 the sub regional department of agriculture for Madre de Dios decided to carry out studies on the Amarakaeri territory.
In 1992 the study concluded that the land within the reserve contained a rich biodiversity of animals with some species being in danger of extinction.
By supreme decree No 028, Amarakaeri was declared a reserved zone in August 2000.
The Harakmbut population together with other native communities of Madre de Dios, like the Matsiguenka and the Yine, backed by FENAMAD, formed the committee for the acknowledgement of the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve. Together the indigenous communities demanded official recognition of the RCA.
The category of Amarakaeri Communal Reserve is a model of a naturally protected area, by a representative organization and its beneficiaries supported by national authority. Within this responsible perspective lies the Indigenous Tourism Company Wanamei SAC.
